The Rivers State House of Assembly has endorsed the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police across Nigeria.
The lawmakers’ position followed the transmission of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the National Assembly to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration.
The bill seeks to amend the Constitution to provide a legal framework for the creation and operation of state police.
With the endorsement on Monday, Rivers State has joined the states considering the proposed amendment, which requires approval by the requisite number of state legislatures before it can become part of the Constitution.

The move comes amid renewed calls for the decentralisation of policing in Nigeria, with proponents arguing that state-controlled police could improve responses to security challenges and make law enforcement more responsive to local circumstances.
