The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has issued a warrant for the arrest of Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), following his failure to appear before the House after a 72-hour ultimatum.
The decision was made during Monday’s plenary session as the lawmakers sought to question Enebeli over the annulled October 5, 2024, local government elections.
The Supreme Court had nullified the election and ordered a fresh poll, which Enebeli scheduled for August 9, 2025.
The Assembly had earlier vowed to probe Enebeli’s role in the discredited election, raising concerns over the credibility of the electoral process in the state.
Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, over the weekend, invited members of the Assembly for discussions on implementing the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The apex court had not only voided the local government polls but also prohibited the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other federal agencies from releasing funds to Rivers State until the state complied with court orders.
In a related development, the Supreme Court also dismissed Governor Fubara’s appeal challenging the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly, affirming that the Speaker and his colleagues could continue legislative activities.
With tensions rising over the governance of Rivers State, political observers are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds, especially concerning the planned local government elections.
