Rivers Assembly Suspends Legislative Activities Indefinitely Amid Budget Controversy

The Rivers State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended its legislative activities following a resolution reached during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in Port Harcourt on Friday.

This decision comes just hours after Governor Siminalayi Fubara formally notified the Assembly of his intention to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill for consideration and approval.

In a letter dated March 13 and addressed to Speaker Amaewhule, Fubara expressed his readiness to appear before the lawmakers on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, or any other convenient date within the month.

The governor emphasized that this move aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling and fulfills the Assembly’s request for a budget re-presentation.

Fubara also recalled a previous attempt to present the budget at the Assembly Quarters, where the lawmakers were temporarily sitting, but was denied access alongside his entourage.

The adjournment raises questions about the legislative process in the state, especially in light of the ongoing power struggle between the executive and the Assembly.

With this indefinite adjournment, the fate of the 2025 budget now hangs in the balance, further deepening the political tensions in Rivers State.
