The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is set to conduct fresh local government elections following the Supreme Court’s annulment of the council polls held in October 2024.
In a statement on Tuesday, RSIEC Chairman and Chief Electoral Commissioner, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), announced a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
The meeting will unveil the timetable and guidelines for the forthcoming 2025 Local Government Elections.
Expected attendees include leaders of registered political parties, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious bodies, media representatives, and civil society groups.
The move comes days after Governor Siminalayi Fubara assured residents that his administration would comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling after reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC).
The apex court had on Friday nullified the October 5, 2024, local government elections, describing the process as invalid.

Governor Fubara has directed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to oversee the affairs of the 23 local government councils until new elections are conducted.
He urged residents to remain calm and assured them of his commitment to upholding constitutional principles and due process.
The Supreme Court’s ruling adds another layer of political tension in the oil-rich state, as it also mandated the reinstatement of Martin Amaewhule as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, further reshaping the state’s political landscape.
