The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, has predicted that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, will defeat President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 general elections.
Amadi made the prediction during an interview with Symfoni TV, where he argued that the current electoral landscape did not guarantee victory for either Tinubu or Atiku.
According to him, Tinubu entered the 2023 presidential election with the perception that he had already secured Lagos State, despite conducting relatively limited campaigning in the state.
Amadi argued that the political environment had since changed, with a significant number of Nigerian youths increasingly identifying with Obi and his political message.
He said the former Anambra State governor’s support base had continued to grow since the 2023 presidential election, particularly among young Nigerians seeking a departure from the established political order.
Amadi also based his prediction on Obi’s performance in the 2023 election, arguing that the Labour Party candidate would have emerged as president if the election had been free, fair and credible.
“There is this sense that Nigeria need something new, and the restiveness and disruption during the 2020 EndSARS incident is a milestone for Obi,” he said.
The political analyst further claimed that Obi secured significant support across different parts of the country during the 2023 election.
“In the last election, Peter Obi had almost more than half of the electorate on his side. There were clear indications that he won in Rivers, Plateau and some Northern states but INEC didn’t declare him winner,” Amadi said.
He argued that the growing desire for political change, particularly among young Nigerians, could significantly alter the electoral dynamics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Amadi maintained that the strength of Tinubu and Atiku should not be taken for granted, suggesting that the emergence of a strong youth-driven political movement around Obi could reshape the contest.
His comments come as political activities and alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major political figures and parties positioning themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race.
