Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited Martins Street, Lagos Island, on Thursday following a major fire that broke out late Wednesday at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) House in Balogun Market.
The governor confirmed that there were no fatalities, although seven people sustained serious injuries and were admitted to hospital for treatment.
He announced that a committee, led by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Gbenga Oyerinde, has been constituted to oversee the demolition of affected structures in the coming days.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents and traders to remain safety conscious during the dry season and advised them to stay clear of the affected area.

He assured that first responders—including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Fire Service, FRSC, and LASTMA, would remain on site to prevent a recurrence and support affected businesses.
The fire impacted more than ten buildings in the area. All shops on Martins Street remain closed, and adjoining streets have been cordoned off, bringing commercial activities to a halt.
