Slim teas or detox teas, whichever you choose to call it, has been around for so many years and is said to have been introduced by the Chinese.
These teas are made of mostly natural ingredients like herbs, flowers, leaves and roots of various plants.
For over 4000 years, the Chinese has been known for the magical teas. Its health benefits theoretically is its ability to elongate the human lifespan.
Slim teas have become popular in recent years. In Nigeria, people seem to be getting fitness conscious and becoming more aware of their health and making attempts to burn excess fats in their bodies Detox teas seem to be the go-to.
People tend to believe their bodies are filled with unhealthy toxins which may be responsible for excess weight or some form of ailment. This may be true to some extent but it’s not 100 per cent true.
As a fitness enthusiast, I also encourage detox, especially when you are about to begin some lifestyle changes or a weight loss program; and this should only run for a short period as it is not a means to an end but a means to hasten and ease the process.
Without talking too much, I’m sure you must have come across certain slim teas from popular brands advertised by popular influencers or you are probably even taking one right now.
They are beautifully marketed to you. Their marketers promise you ‘heaven on earth’ getting you delighted and ready to spend. But, have you ever wondered, how does slim tea even work? what’s the science behind it?
Firstly, this is what detox does. While detox teas and slim teas may be used interchangeably, detox is the elimination of toxins from your body to promote good health and improve weight loss. This process is however not limited to drinking teas, there are other diets that can assist your body detox. There’s no evidence that these diets solely and completely take out the toxins but here is something you should know also.
The human body is sophisticated enough to get rid of these toxins through the kidney, skin, liver, lungs and your digestive systems. As long as these organs are healthy they will efficiently eliminate every unwanted substance.
Teas are popular these days, I have a cup of the regular teas every morning with a little bit of lemon and honey. It’s a good way to start the day. Green tea is the most popular and widely consumed. It is believed to be the most healthy because it contains chemicals like catechins that can boost weight loss.
While there are simple teas with known ingredients and herbs, some of these slim teas are not fully regulated and may contain substances that may be harmful to your health.
Most reputable slim tea companies will advise you to consume healthy meals and exercise when you take slim tea while some others make you believe there’s a superpower that instantly makes you slim.
Trust me, you will never see any physical changes from drinking teas alone except you intentionally make lifestyle changes.
How does slim tea work
This is how slim teas work. Slim teas contain a large per cent of caffein and caffein is known for its appetite suppressing abilities, high intake of it can also act as a diuretic and diuretics are known to expel water from your system. You realise that you urinate more and have a lot of bowel movement.
There’s no doubt that when you lose fluid, it appears that you drop some pounds, but that weight is called water weight and it’s not sustainable because in the process of losing so much fluid, you lose electrolytes that your body needs to function properly.
Low levels of blood electrolyte can cause serious health issues. Slim teas may also contain laxatives that speed up your digestive system which will make you visit the loo frequently than usual and make your abdomen or stomach appear slimmer afterwards and doesn’t offer a lasting solution.
Side Effects of Slim Teas
- Slim teas may be harmful to some people. The side effects may include diarrhoea caused by the laxatives
- electrolyte imbalance; dehydration caused by frequent urination and loss of fluid can lead to low electrolyte levels and can be responsible for muscle spasm, aches and abnormal heart rates.
- High intake of caffeine can be responsible for insomnia, nervousness, headache, anxiety and increased stress levels and we know how vital sleep is both for weight loss and for a healthy cardiovascular system.
- Drug interaction is also a major concern, just like the way you are advised to avoid alcohol when you are on certain medications, same advice goes here because it can either decrease the efficacy or magnify the effects leading to an overdose of such drugs.
If you are really interested in shedding some weight and living healthy, you need to make some lifestyle changes that actually require deliberate effort and not just enough money to buy expensive teas that don’t work. Begin with a healthy whole meal, balanced diet as we were taught in primary school. Don’t avoid carbs except if you are on a keto diet.
Dieticians and fitness gurus advice 50% carbs,30% protein and 20% fat for a daily balanced diet.
Fruits rich in antioxidants also help expel toxins from your system which will, in turn, hasten the fat burning process by increasing your metabolic rate and ease up your digestive tracks to function adequately.
Sign up to the nearest gym close to you. A healthy diet is good but when combined with workouts can be gratifying. You will get optimal results but also, know that a healthy and fit lifestyle consists of 70% dieting and 30% workout so that you can look amazing without hitting the gym, but please!!! Go to the gym for your cardiovascular health as well.

In conclusion, detox and slim teas don’t work on their own, you need to incorporate a good diet and some exercising to make it work and it should only be taken for a period of time as long term continuous consumption may lead to other health hazards.
If you are on any medication please consult your doctor before you begin any form of detoxification.
