Security operatives, on Saturday morning, took over and cordoned off the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, Lagos, where some residents had planned to stage a protest.
An Armoured Personnel Carrier is currently stationed at the entrance of the park while Hilux vans are at strategic spots.
Fully armed personnel are also fully on ground while no single protester is seen within the vicinity.
The every-busy Ikorodu road is almost deserted with few vehicles plying the road.
Shops in the area are also locked up.
Most residents are staying indoors to avoid being caught up in any clash between security agents and protesters.
Some groups and individuals had fixed June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, for protests against rising insecurity and economic hardship.
But the police have continued to warn that it would not allow protest in any part of the state.
The police, in a statement on Friday, urged residents to disregard any sit-at-home directive being circulated on social media.
State Police Public Relations Officher, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, urged residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses.
The statement read, “Lagos State Police Command wishes to state clearly that it is not aware of any planned protest in Lagos State to commemorate the 2021 Democracy Day on Saturday, 12th June, 2021.
“In this regard, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu, therefore appeals to members of the public to disregard any sit-at-home order called by certain groups which is being circulated on the social media and go about their lawful businesses, as the police and other security agencies have made necessary arrangements to maintain law and order across the state.”
Gani Fawehinmi Park, popularly known as Freedom Park, was the venue where the massive Occupy Nigeria protest, which shook the government of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was held in 2012.
However, the situation in most parts of Lagos State remains.
Vehicular and human movements across Ikeja, Agege, Mangoro, among other areas of Lagos, remain normal.
