The Senate on Thursday, March 20, approved the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State, endorsing his decision to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara and install a sole administrator.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the resolution after a closed-door session that lasted about two hours.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion for the session under Senate Order 135, seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro.
During deliberations, Akpabio called for a voice vote, and the lawmakers approved the emergency rule. Announcing the outcome, he said the Senate had acted under Section 305(2) of the Constitution.

“We hope that the President’s declaration will foster peace and resolve the ongoing impasse in Rivers State,” Akpabio stated.
The Senate also urged Tinubu to set up an ad hoc committee of “eminent” Nigerians to mediate between the warring factions in the state.
Additionally, lawmakers resolved that the state of emergency should be reviewed or lifted within six months.
They also approved the formation of a legislative oversight committee, comprising members of both chambers, to monitor the situation in Rivers.
