Senate Confirms Justice Oyewole’s Appointment to Supreme Court

The Senate has approved the appointment of Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation was secured on Tuesday following the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The committee is chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central).

While presenting the report, Senator Adegbonmire urged lawmakers to endorse the committee’s findings, noting that Justice Oyewole, who currently serves at the Court of Appeal, met all constitutional and professional requirements for elevation to the apex court.

He accordingly moved a motion that the Senate receive and consider the committee’s report on the confirmation of Justice Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court, which was unanimously adopted by the chamber.

Justice Oyewole’s nomination followed a request transmitted to the Senate last Tuesday by President Bola Tinubu, in accordance with Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The letter was read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In the correspondence, President Tinubu formally sought the Senate’s confirmation of Justice Oyewole’s appointment to the Supreme Court.

The request was subsequently referred to the Judiciary Committee for screening and evaluation.

The committee’s successful screening exercise paved the way for Tuesday’s confirmation, completing the constitutional process for Justice Oyewole’s elevation to Nigeria’s highest court.
