Law Reform Shake-Up: Senate Confirms Nominees as Alkali Backs Out

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed two nominees for key leadership roles in the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, following a screening process conducted by its relevant committee.

However, a third nominee, Professor Fatima Alkali, declined the appointment, prompting a recommendation for her replacement.

Chairman of the Senate Committee overseeing the screening, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, told lawmakers that the committee had requested and received all necessary documentation, including curriculum vitae and supporting materials, from the nominees.

“On Wednesday, 25th June 2025, two of the nominees appeared before the committee. The third one, Professor Fatima Alkali, turned down the appointment,” Adegbonmire disclosed during plenary.

In light of Alkali’s decision, the committee has advised that a new nominee — specifically a female candidate from Nigeria’s north-east — be considered in her place, citing the need for gender balance and regional equity.

The two remaining nominees, Professor Dakas Dakas, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) from the north-central zone, and Mr. Okolocha from the south-south, received a clean bill of health from the committee.

According to Adegbonmire, both candidates were found to have the “requisite qualifications, leadership qualities, and comportment” necessary for their roles. “The committee is satisfied with their qualifications, experience, suitability, competence, and integrity,” he added.

No petitions or adverse reports were submitted against any of the nominees.

Following the report, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put their confirmation to a voice vote, and the chamber approved both nominations.
