The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step towards addressing the rampant vandalization of transmission lines across the country, particularly focusing on recent incidents along the Jos-Gombe 330KV transmission line.
In response to the severe disruptions in power supply affecting seven states in the North-East zone, the Senate has called on the Federal Government to establish a special intervention fund dedicated to the maintenance of transmission lines.
The motion, spearheaded by Senator Manu Haruna of Taraba Central, highlighted the urgent need to tackle the ongoing vandalism of transmission lines belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The Senate emphasized the detrimental impact of these acts of sabotage on both the economy and the livelihoods of citizens, underscoring the importance of immediate action.
Senator Shuaibu Lau further emphasized the urgency of the situation, casting doubt on the viability of the Mambilla hydro project and calling for a thorough investigation into its procurement and expenditure.
The Senate echoed this sentiment by urging the establishment of a special committee to probe the procurement process and expenditures related to the project.
In addition to demanding the allocation of funds to the TCN for the repair of the Jos-Gombe transmission line, the Senate underscored the need for collaboration between the Ministry of Power, security agencies, and local vigilantes in host communities.
This collaborative effort aims to enhance security measures and deter future acts of vandalism against TCN transmission lines.
As the Senate takes proactive measures to address the ongoing challenges in the power sector, stakeholders anticipate swift and decisive action from the Federal Government to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted power supply to affected areas.
