The Senate has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to step up operations aimed at rescuing Nigerians held captive by kidnappers and securing communities exposed to attacks.
The appeal was made by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday as the upper chamber resumed plenary following its annual recess, which began on July 23, 2026.
Akpabio said the Senate would use legislation, appropriation and its oversight responsibilities to confront insecurity, flooding and the rising cost of living across the country.
He stressed that the government must do more to protect vulnerable communities and ensure the safe return of abducted citizens.
According to him, the Senate would review existing measures and consider further legislative, budgetary and oversight interventions to address the country’s security challenges.

Akpabio said the continued captivity of even one Nigerian remained a matter of national concern, adding that government institutions had a responsibility to protect citizens from threats to their lives.
He further noted that the Senate could not resume after its recess without confronting the difficulties facing Nigerians, saying the challenges confronting citizens had continued despite the suspension of plenary.
He said the effectiveness of government should be reflected in safer communities, improved livelihoods and a stronger country for present and future generations.
The Senate President also maintained that sympathy alone was insufficient in responding to the plight of kidnapped Nigerians, insisting that affected citizens deserved concrete action and the full use of constitutional responsibilities to address their situation.
