The Nigerian Senate has constituted a high-powered committee tasked with providing legislative oversight in Rivers State, amid ongoing political tensions and governance concerns in the region. The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who underscored the urgency and importance of the committee’s mandate.
Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. According to Akpabio, the committee’s establishment signals the Senate’s commitment to reinforcing democratic institutions and ensuring accountability at all levels of government.
“The mandate of this committee is both strategic and urgent. We must rise to the challenge of preserving the democratic order and providing effective legislative oversight, particularly in a state as politically significant as Rivers,” Akpabio stated.
He further noted that the composition of the committee could be reviewed following further consultations, reflecting the evolving nature of its assignment.

The committee comprises prominent senators across party lines and geopolitical zones, including Adamu Aliero, Osita Izunaso, Osita Ngwu (South East), Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire (Ondo), Sani Musa, Simon Lalong, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe (Labour Party), Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed (APC, Jigawa). The Clerk of the Senate will serve alongside the members in an administrative capacity.
Akpabio urged the committee to commence its duties without delay, emphasizing the Senate’s resolve to uphold constitutional values and legislative integrity throughout the country.
This development comes as the Senate continues to monitor unfolding events in Rivers State, with the leadership reiterating its readiness to act in defense of democratic principles.
