The Senate is scheduled to screen Professor Joash Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday, October 16.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 15, by the Senate’s Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, and circulated to journalists in Abuja.
The statement confirmed that the screening will take place at the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly Complex.
“The Office of the Secretary, Research and Information wishes to notify members of the Press and the general public that the Senate will on Thursday, 16th October, 2025, conduct the screening of the nominee of President Bola Tinubu, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, as INEC Chairman,” it read.
It further urged members of the Senate Press Corps to provide full media coverage of the proceedings, while television stations were requested to offer live broadcast of the event.
Amupitan’s nomination, which received the National Council of State’s endorsement last week, follows the exit of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu after ten years at the helm of the electoral body.

In his letter to the Senate, Tinubu said the appointment was made in accordance with Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), urging senators to act promptly.
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” Tinubu stated.
The nomination has sparked discussions about INEC’s independence and the credibility of future elections.
While the presidency has described Amupitan as “an apolitical figure of impeccable integrity,” civil society groups and opposition parties have called for a transparent and thorough screening process.
The outcome of Thursday’s session is expected to set the tone for electoral reforms and test Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy ahead of 2027.
