The Senate has summoned National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the heads of the Department of State Services (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for a closed-door briefing on allegations that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is funding Boko Haram in Nigeria.

The move follows recent claims by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry, who accused USAID of sponsoring insurgency in Nigeria.

While the U.S. Congress is already investigating the allegation, the Nigerian Senate resolved on Wednesday, February 19, to conduct its own inquiry.

The resolution was based on a motion titled Urgent Need to Investigate the Alleged Funding of Boko Haram by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) and co-sponsored by eight other senators.

Following a debate on the motion, the Senate directed Ribadu, DSS Director-General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, and their counterparts in the NIA and DIA to appear before lawmakers on a date to be announced.
