The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to review the country’s firearm laws to permit responsible citizens to legally own guns, citing escalating insecurity in Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger states.
The call was made on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, during plenary discussions on rising attacks across the region.
The motion, sponsored by Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South), highlighted a surge in kidnappings, banditry, and attacks on schools and places of worship.
Senators specifically referenced the November 18 attack in Eruku, Kwara State, where gunmen killed two worshippers and abducted 38 others.
Lawmakers warned that repeated attacks have forced the closure of several schools, including all 47 unity schools, disrupting the education of thousands of children.

They stressed that without urgent legal reforms, communities remain vulnerable to armed attacks.
While commending President Bola Tinubu for cancelling foreign trips to coordinate security efforts that led to the release of some abductees, senators argued that Nigeria’s firearm laws must be updated to reflect the current security landscape.
They noted that many countries legally allow responsible citizens to own guns for self-protection, suggesting similar measures could help curb insecurity at home.
