Several Injured As Two Trains Collide Near Madrid

Several people were reportedly injured after two trains collided south of Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday morning, prompting an emergency response and the suspension of high-speed rail services on the affected route.

The mayor of Urda, Manuel Galan, confirmed the incident in an interview with Spanish public broadcaster TVE, saying there were casualties following the collision.

However, a spokesperson for Spain’s emergency services told the AFP news agency that it was too early to confirm the extent of the injuries.

The spokesperson said the collision occurred shortly before 9:00 am local time, adding that emergency responders had mobilised resources to the scene.

“All resources are currently being deployed,” the spokesperson said, listing several fire crews, three helicopters and two mobile intensive care units among the resources dispatched.

Authorities had yet to provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the collision or the precise number of people injured at the time of the report.

The incident comes less than a year after a separate rail disaster in Adamuz, southern Spain, claimed 46 lives, renewing attention on railway safety in the country.
