Mahdi Shehu has condemned the alleged expenditure by the presidency, expressing outrage over reports that more than N34.39 billion was used for foreign exchange transactions linked to overseas trips and other official engagements within a two-year span.
Reacting via a post on X on Monday, the 2nd of February, 2026, Shehu faulted the development, arguing that it exposed a disturbing level of insensitivity by those in power to the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.
Describing the situation as a grave failure of leadership, he wrote, “This is heartlessness in governance,” while further characterising the spending as an extreme abuse of authority.
He went on to label the alleged expenditure as governance terrorism, democratic robbery, and political banditry, insisting that such actions undermine the moral foundation of democratic rule.
According to him, the decision represents economic sabotage and falls far below acceptable ethical standards, calling it both immoral and indecent.

Shehu maintained that the matter points to a calculated squandering of public funds, citing what he described as endless domestic and international blunders that continue to weaken the nation’s economy.
Escalating his criticism, he described the development as a crime against humanity and a reckless destruction of national resources.
He concluded with a strong warning, stating, “Even angels in heaven will put a continuous curse on this recklessness. Nigerians are sufficiently afflicted,” underscoring the depth of his anger over the issue.
