Shehu Sani Demands Tougher Immigration Rules After Russian Tourist Sex Scandal

Nigerian commentator and former lawmaker Shehu Sani has called for tougher immigration and safety measures in African countries following reports of a Russian national accused of sexually exploiting women in Ghana and Kenya.

In a message shared on his official X account on Thursday, February 19, Sani described the incident as a “tragic and avoidable” violation with lasting consequences for the victims and their families.

He expressed particular concern for children whose mothers were allegedly involved in the widely circulating video clips, noting that the psychological impact could be long-lasting.

Sani highlighted the way the incident unfolded, suggesting that it underscores broader social vulnerabilities and the risks posed by opportunistic individuals who exploit trust.

“For his skin colour and greed, within five minutes of introduction, the women lowered their pride, dignity and moral standards,” he wrote, emphasising the need for greater awareness and personal caution.

He also noted that the widespread availability of hidden cameras — including in everyday objects like wristwatches, pens and cufflinks — complicates personal safety, urging African women to be vigilant.

“I particularly share the pain and anguish of those little children whose mother was involved; how they will deal with the trauma of these viral video clips will definitely affect their lives forever,” he said.

The incident drew an official response from Ghanaian authorities, who reportedly issued an arrest warrant for the Russian man involved. Sani commended the Government of Ghana for its action, calling on other nations to follow suit.

He also urged immigration officials across the continent to tighten visa processes and ensure that foreigners entering African countries have legitimate and verifiable reasons for their visits.

“Even though they come as tourists, this is a moment to enforce stricter immigration rules and learn from the tragic experience in order to protect others,” he said.

As the case continues to unfold, discussions about personal safety, digital privacy, and immigration oversight are expected to remain in the spotlight across the region.
