Shekarau’s Defection Boosts APC Strength In Kano Political Landscape

Governor Abba Yusuf has welcomed the return of former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a significant boost to the party’s growing influence in the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said Shekarau’s defection would further consolidate the APC’s political structure in Kano ahead of future elections.

According to the statement, arrangements are underway for a formal reception of the former governor into the party, with a date to be announced in consultation with the APC national leadership.

“The party in Kano continues to witness growing support and consolidation, positioning itself as the most dominant political force in the state,” the statement read.

Shekarau’s return comes shortly after his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he communicated in a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area.

In the letter, the former governor said his decision followed extensive consultations with members of his political group, noting that it was part of a broader strategy to continue his political career on a different platform.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he wrote.

Shekarau also expressed appreciation to party leaders at the grassroots level, offering prayers for continued guidance in their service.

Political observers say the development could reshape alignments in Kano State, where party loyalty and grassroots mobilisation remain key determinants of electoral success.

His return is expected to influence political calculations as parties begin early positioning ahead of the next election cycle.

Governor Yusuf, meanwhile, urged party members to remain united and intensify mobilisation efforts across the state, expressing confidence that the APC is well-positioned to secure victory in upcoming elections.

The defection underscores ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly as parties strengthen their bases in anticipation of future contests.
