Sokoto Govt Bans Student Signing-Out Over Rising Indiscipline

The Sokoto State Government has officially banned all forms of “signing-out” celebrations by graduating secondary school students, citing increasing incidents of student misconduct, public disturbances, and destruction of property linked to the tradition.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, who said the directive applies to all public and private secondary schools across the state.

According to the commissioner, the popular signing-out culture—once a modest celebration marking the end of final exams—has significantly drifted from its purpose, evolving into activities that undermine academic discipline and public order.

“All principals have been directed to take immediate steps to prevent students from organising or participating in any form of signing-out celebrations, whether within or outside school premises,” Ala stated.

The Ministry also urged parents and guardians to support the directive by discouraging their children from engaging in actions that conflict with the discipline and values promoted by schools.

The directive, signed by Abubakar Abdullahi, Director of Examination Matters, mandates full compliance from all heads of secondary institutions and will be enforced with immediate effect.
