The Emir of Gwoza Local Government Area in Borno State, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, has said that a series of coordinated suicide attacks that left the community in mourning claimed the lives of 30 people.
The attacks occurred at various locations in Gwoza town, including a wedding reception and a burial ceremony, causing widespread panic and chaos.
“More than 30 people were killed with over 100 sustaining various degrees of injuries, with many victims evacuated to Maiduguri for medical attention,” said Timta.
According to the Emir, the first attack was carried out by an unidentified woman who, along with two children, infiltrated a wedding reception. She detonated her Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), resulting in multiple fatalities, including herself. Shortly after, another bomber targeted a nearby burial ceremony, detonating additional IEDs and causing further casualties.
“At least, over 100 people were injured, and most of them who sustained serious injuries have been rushed to Maiduguri with military escort for proper medical attention,” Timta explained.
The attacks have plunged the entire Gwoza council area into mourning. The community is still reeling from the tragic events, which have brought back painful memories of previous violence in the region.
Ahmed Usman Jaha, a member representing Gwoza/Chibok/Damboa federal constituency, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
“I sympathize with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the multiple attacks and pray to Allah to grant the souls of the deceased Aljannatul Firdaus, and wish those who sustained injuries a quick recovery,” Jaha said.
Gwoza town, located in southern Borno bordering Cameroon, has a history of violence and was previously declared Boko Haram Territory after being captured by insurgents.
Hundreds were killed before the area was later liberated by troops. The recent attacks highlight the ongoing security challenges facing the region.
