Sultan Urges Muslims To Search For New Moon Monday

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has directed Muslims nationwide to observe the new moon of Jumada Assaniya 1448 AH on Monday, November 9, 2026.

Jumada Assaniya, also known as Jumada al-Thani or Jumada al-Akhirah, is the sixth month in the Islamic lunar calendar.

The directive was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto, asking Muslims to begin searching for the crescent on Monday, which falls on the 29th day of Jumada al-Ula 1448 AH.

The statement, signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, who chairs the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, instructed anyone who sights the moon to notify their nearest district or village head.

The traditional leaders are expected to forward the reports to the Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).

“Muslims are therefore requested to start looking for the new moon of Jumada Assaniya 1448 AH on Monday and report its sighting to the nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA),” the statement said.

The council explained that verified sightings must be communicated through the traditional leadership structure to allow the Sultan to make the necessary announcement and take appropriate action.

It also urged Muslims to pray for Allah’s guidance and support as they carry out the religious obligation.

“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty, amen,” the statement added.
