Veteran Nigerian filmmaker, actor and producer, Sunny Alli, has criticised the frequent portrayal of witchcraft and money ritual themes in Nollywood movies, describing such storylines as unrealistic and lacking credibility.
The veteran actor made the remarks during a recent interview, where he spoke about his approach to filmmaking and the kind of stories he chooses to tell.
According to Alli, he does not believe in witchcraft or money rituals and, as a result, deliberately avoids incorporating such themes into his movie scripts.
He challenged filmmakers who depict witches’ gatherings and ritual practices in movies, questioning how they arrived at such portrayals.

“There are certain things I can never write in my films. Things like witches having meetings. How? Who has ever been to their meeting before or knows where they meet? What did they look like?” he asked.
The filmmaker also questioned the logic behind the popular Nollywood depiction of miraculous healings, where illnesses allegedly disappear instantly during prayer sessions.
He further dismissed claims surrounding money rituals, arguing that the narratives often presented in films do not stand up to logical scrutiny.
“I don’t believe in money rituals. Because they said it is the spirit that is supplying the money, and I asked if the spirit has its own printing machine? Or is the spirit bringing the money from the Central Bank or from the bureau de change?” he said.
Alli maintained that he prefers producing films rooted in reality rather than relying on supernatural plots.
“I love making realistic movies,” he added.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about the dominance of supernatural themes in Nollywood productions, with some critics arguing that the industry relies too heavily on stories centred on witchcraft, rituals and spiritual conflicts.
