Super Eagles Mourn Legendary Goalkeeper Peter Rufai, at 61

Tributes have poured in following the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61.

In a heartfelt message posted on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter), the Nigerian national team paid tribute to the football icon, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” describing him as a monumental figure in the country’s football history.

“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the statement read.

The Super Eagles further praised Rufai for his lasting impact on and off the pitch, calling attention to the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” the tribute added.

Rufai was a key member of the golden generation that brought Nigeria its second AFCON title in 1994 and also helped the country qualify for its first-ever FIFA World Cup the same year.
