Nigeria’s Super Falcons got off to a flying start at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), defeating Tunisia 3–0 in their Group B opener on Sunday.
Former Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala set the tone early, giving Nigeria the lead in just the 4th minute with a composed finish inside the box.
The early goal calmed nerves and allowed the Falcons to take control of the match from the onset.
Despite Tunisia attempting to settle into the game, Nigeria continued to press high though with less dominance in possession. Just before halftime, the Falcons doubled their lead.
Rinsola Babajide found the back of the net in the 45+1 minute, capping off a well-worked team move and giving Nigeria a comfortable 2–0 advantage heading into the break.
The second half saw Nigeria maintain their dominance, particularly in the midfield, where they controlled the tempo and dictated play.
However, they were guilty of missing several clear-cut chances, with their forwards failing to convert in front of goal.

Still, the pressure paid off late in the game. In the 84th minute, substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo made an immediate impact, latching onto a well crossed ball in Tunisia’s 18 yard and slotting home a beautiful goal to make it 3–0 and seal the win for Nigeria.
Tunisia struggled to create any meaningful chances throughout the match, extending their goal drought and underlining the gulf in quality between both sides.
The result gives Nigeria three crucial points and a strong start to their quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
The team will now turn their attention to their next group fixture as they aim to maintain their momentum in the competition.
