In an unusual turn of events, a suspected employment scammer voluntarily turned himself in at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Gombe Zonal Directorate on Monday, citing fear of the Commission as his reason.

The Commission disclosed this in a statement shared on its Facebook page on Monday.

According to the EFCC, the middle-aged man, identified as Idris Adamu, walked into the office at approximately 1:00 p.m. and requested an audience with the Acting Zonal Director, Deputy Commander of the commission (DCE), Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad.

Officials stated that Adamu expressed a desire to “repent” and confess past crimes involving impersonation and obtaining money under false pretenses.

During a meeting in the director’s office, Adamu reportedly said,
“I came to repent of my sins and to confess to the EFCC. In the past, I have obtained an aggregate sum of N9 million through my bank account from different individuals in the guise of offering them employment opportunities in Federal Government agencies, which was false. I have changed, but I am afraid of the EFCC.”

His confession was met with a calm but firm response from DCE Sa’ad, who thanked him for coming forward and immediately directed that he be transferred to the Investigation Department for further inquiry.

EFCC sources say the investigation will aim to verify Adamu’s claims, trace the victims involved, and determine whether other accomplices were part of the scheme.

The EFCC has long warned Nigerians to be cautious of employment scams, especially those that promise government jobs in exchange for money.

However, Monday’s incident underscores both the impact of the Commission’s growing reputation and the persistent challenge of fraud targeting job seekers.
