The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has detailed how its rescue teams, working alongside the Fire Service and other emergency responders, swiftly contained a burning gas truck at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 12, FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide said their prompt intervention prevented further destruction and potential loss of life.
The crash, which occurred during peak traffic hours, involved 11 male adults, leaving five injured and two dead. A total of 15 vehicles were affected in the collision, which caused a major traffic gridlock.
Preliminary reports suggest that the accident was caused by mechanical failure, specifically brake failure in one of the vehicles.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern over what he described as a “preventable” crash, stressing the need for strict adherence to safety regulations, particularly for vehicles transporting hazardous materials.
“He warned against neglecting necessary safety measures, stating that appropriate sanctions would continue to be imposed on drivers and vehicle owners who compromise safety at the expense of other road users, in accordance with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations,” the statement read in part.
Mohammed urged fleet managers, drivers, and vehicle owners to prioritise safety in fleet operations to prevent similar incidents.
He also reassured the public of the FRSC’s commitment to deploying all available resources in handling emergencies and safeguarding road users.
He called on motorists and commuters to remain vigilant and report emergencies to the FRSC or other relevant agencies via the Corps’ toll-free emergency line, 122.
