Tackle Unemployment, Insecurity, Hunger — Methodist Church Charges Tinubu

In a resolute appeal to the nation’s leadership, the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN) has urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to take immediate action against the rising tide of youth unemployment, poverty, hunger, and insecurity challenges exacerbated by the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency.

This impassioned plea was contained in a communiqué issued over the weekend following the church’s joint annual conference in Jalingo, Taraba State.

The document, signed by the communiqué committee chairman, Mr. Anchau Andrew, underscored the urgent need for policies that would alleviate the widespread hardship engulfing the nation.

UMCN also expressed deep concern over the forced closure of its worship centers in Taraba State, describing the ordeal as a significant source of distress both emotionally and physically for its members.

The church called on the state government and religious leaders to step in and mediate the dispute between UMCN and a breakaway faction, emphasizing the need for reconciliation and peaceful resolution.

In a firm stance on doctrinal matters, UMCN reaffirmed its adherence to the traditional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman, in line with its Social Principles.

The church also condemned all forms of killings and human rights violations across the country, advocating for the protection of human dignity and the promotion of peace.

Amidst an ongoing legal tussle over the ownership of UMCN school properties, currently controlled by the breakaway faction, the church resolved to seek a court injunction to reclaim its assets.
