One person has been confirmed dead, while another sustained serious injuries after a petroleum tanker overturned and burst into flames in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 4, 2026, opposite the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat, when the tanker conveying petroleum products was involved in a road accident.
The resulting inferno reportedly spread to nearby shops and buildings, causing damage to properties in the area.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday through its Police Public Relations Officer, Eitokpah Sunday.
According to the police, the tanker driver was initially rescued from the burning vehicle and taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The Command, however, later confirmed that one person died in the incident, while another victim sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment.

The police said officers from the Odukpani Division had been deployed to the scene to secure the area, maintain public order and prevent further casualties.
It added that the Fire Service had also been alerted to mobilise personnel and equipment to contain the blaze.
The Command urged residents and motorists to avoid the affected area to enable emergency responders to carry out their operations without obstruction.
It further assured the public that additional information would be made available as verified details of the incident emerged.
