Lagos State residents are facing intimidation from suspected miscreants ahead of the planned nationwide hunger protest, scheduled from August 1 to August 10, 2024.
In a viral video circulating on Tuesday, individuals are seen threatening market vendors and other citizens with violence if they participate in the demonstration.
The video features men with masked voices warning Lagosians against joining the protest, suggesting severe repercussions.
“Anyone confident should come out on Thursday to protest. Are you the only one hungry? If you dare come out for the protest, you will be mercilessly dealt with,” one of the men declares.
He further threatens, “If they burn your shops, who will be responsible for it? On Thursday, if you truly believe in your cause, come out and protest. You are not the only ones who are hungry; we don’t want things to be destroyed in Lagos. We will not allow it.”
In response to the looming threat, the Federal Government has intensified its efforts to prevent any violence or disruption. Security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force, have been on high alert to ensure the safety of both protesters and non-protesters.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed senior officers to protect participants and ensure peaceful demonstrations. The police have also emphasized their commitment to maintaining order and preventing any acts of violence.
On Monday, some Lagos youths organized a countermarch in a show of solidarity against the planned hunger protests. This counter-protest was aimed at demonstrating support for the government and discouraging participation in the nationwide demonstrations.
The planned protest has received backing from prominent political figures such as Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labor Party. They have expressed solidarity with the protestors, who are voicing their frustrations over the economic hardships affecting Nigerians.
As tensions rise, the Federal Government’s efforts to manage the situation and ensure public safety remain crucial.
Both the government and the police are urging citizens to remain peaceful and avoid any actions that could lead to further unrest.
