Tinubu Approves 11 New Private Universities

In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education sector, President Bola Tinubu has approved licences for 11 new private universities.

The announcement was made on the 3rd of March, 2025, by the President’s Special Adviser on Media & Public Communication, Sunday Dare, via his official X handle.

According to Dare, the approvals were granted during the Federal Executive Council meeting, reflecting Tinubu’s commitment to broadening access to quality education.

Here are the newly approved institutions set to reshape the academic landscape in Nigeria:

• New City University – Ayetoro, Ogun State

• University of Fortune – Igbotako, Ondo State

• Eranova University – Mabushi, Abuja

• Minaret University – Ikirun, Osun State

• Abubakar Toyin University – Oke-Agba, Kwara State

• Southern Atlantic University – Uyo, Akwa Ibom State

• Lens University – Ilemona, Kwara State

• Monarch University – Iyesi-Ota, Ogun State

• Tonnie Iredia University of Communication – Benin City, Edo State

• Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management – Lagos State

• Kevin Eze University – Mgbowo, Enugu State

In a statement accompanying the approvals, the presidency reaffirmed its dedication to “expanding the frontiers of educational opportunities and infrastructure.”

With this latest addition, Nigeria’s tally of private universities will rise from 147 to 158, reinforcing the nation’s position as a hub for academic growth and innovation.
