President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of the Chief of Naval Operations of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Musa Katagum, who died on the 19th of February, 2026, following a prolonged illness.
The President’s condolence was conveyed in a statement issued on Friday, the 20th of February, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In his message, Tinubu extended sympathy to the bereaved family, as well as officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy and the broader Armed Forces leadership. He described the loss as “a blow to the military and the country,” noting Katagum’s wealth of experience and dedication to national service.
The President acknowledged the late Rear Admiral’s significant contributions to the Armed Forces, applauding his professionalism and distinguished service record.

Tinubu reflected on Katagum’s career progression, recalling his tenure as Director of Presidential Communication, Command and Control Centre (PC4), and Chief of Intelligence of the Nigerian Navy, prior to his appointment as Chief of Operations in November last year.
He praised the deceased officer for “his valour, exceptional leadership, and mentorship of a generation of officers,” emphasizing that his impact would continue to resonate within the military institution.
The President further prayed that “Almighty Allah would grant his soul eternal rest and give succour to his family and comrades in the military at this time of grief.”
