Tinubu Extends Customs Boss Adeniyi’s Tenure By One Year

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The extension, which takes effect from August 31, 2025, was formally announced in a statement released by Bayo Onanuga,Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy on Thursday, via X (formerly Twitter)

According to the statement, the President’s decision aims to allow Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key national initiatives critical to the Tinubu administration’s economic and trade agenda.

Specifically, the extension will enable Adeniyi to:

Drive forward the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
Implement the much-anticipated National Single Window Project to streamline cross-border trade; and Oversee Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

President Tinubu praised Mr. Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the extension will enhance the Customs Service’s capacity in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.

Mr. Adeniyi was appointed as Comptroller-General of Customs in 2023 and has since spearheaded a number of reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the Service.
