Tinubu Highlights Healthcare Reforms, Says Best Days Of Nigerian Health Sector Ahead

President Bola Tinubu has highlighted what he described as major achievements of his administration in Nigeria’s health sector, saying ongoing reforms are expanding access to healthcare, strengthening the health workforce and improving health outcomes across the country.

In a post shared on his X handle on Wednesday, the President said every Nigerian deserves access to quality healthcare irrespective of their location or income, stressing that his administration has embarked on one of the most comprehensive healthcare transformation programmes in decades.

“Every Nigerian deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live or what they earn.

“Since assuming office, our administration, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has embarked on one of the most ambitious and comprehensive transformations of our health sector in decades.

“We are revitalising Primary Healthcare Centres, expanding health insurance, protecting millions of children through immunisation, strengthening our health workforce, upgrading specialist hospitals, improving maternal and child health, and positioning Nigeria to become a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare investment,” Tinubu wrote.

The President said the reforms were already yielding measurable results across different areas of the healthcare system.

According to him, more than six million Nigerians have been added to the National Health Insurance Scheme, while 4,161 Primary Healthcare Centres are undergoing revitalisation, with 3,158 projects already completed.

He added that 14,283 Primary Healthcare Centres, representing more than half of Nigeria’s 27,003 PHCs, are now functional.

Tinubu also disclosed that more than 102 million children have been vaccinated against Measles-Rubella, while 17.1 million adolescent girls have received the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to protect them against cervical cancer.

The President further revealed that 78,054 frontline health workers have been trained, while 20,000 health professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and midwives, have been recruited into federal tertiary hospitals.

He said the administration has also delivered 503 health infrastructure projects nationwide and commenced the development of three world-class cancer centres.

“These reforms are about saving lives today while building a stronger, more resilient health system for generations to come.

“I encourage you to read it. A healthier Nigeria is central to our Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are building a healthier, stronger and more prosperous nation, one reform, one community and one life at a time.

“Our work continues. The best days of Nigerian healthcare are still ahead of us,” he added.

Backing the President’s remarks, the Presidency released a detailed Nigeria Health Sector Impact Report, outlining progress recorded under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, launched in December 2023.

According to the report, maternal mortality declined by 17 per cent in 2025 compared to 2023 across the 172 Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) local government areas, while newborn mortality dropped by 10 per cent over the same period.

The report further stated that more than 40,000 women benefited from free Caesarean section surgeries reimbursed through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) between 2024 and 2026, while over 4,000 women received free treatment for Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) under the Federal Government’s intervention programme.

It also highlighted progress in immunisation, noting that over 174 million polio vaccine doses and 18.3 million diphtheria vaccinations had been administered, while more than 39,000 people had received Mpox vaccines across 12 states, making Nigeria the first African country to deploy the vaccine.

On infrastructure and healthcare investment, the report stated that 20 Federal Tertiary Hospitals have been upgraded or expanded, while the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment has been established.

The Presidency also disclosed that 47 companies are benefiting from the Presidential Executive Order aimed at promoting medical industrialisation, with ₦26 billion in concessions granted and financing mobilised to support more than 90 projects under a $5 billion healthcare investment pipeline.

According to the report, the reforms are intended to strengthen healthcare delivery, improve health outcomes and position Nigeria as a leading destination for pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare investment in Africa.
