Tinubu Mourns Air India Plane Crash Victims, Condoles With PM Modi

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India following the crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12.

The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, including 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, crashed around 1:00 pm shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which has since been shut down.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the crash as a heartbreaking tragedy and extended prayers to the victims’ families and all those affected.

“The tragedy of Air India reminds us, once again, of the fragility of life and the common bond of humanity that holds us together,” the statement read.

“At this moment of sorrow and pain, Nigeria stands in solidarity with our friend, brother and partner, Narendra Modi, and the people of India,” Tinubu said.

He also extended condolences to the governments and citizens of Britain, Portugal, and Canada for the loss of their nationals on the flight.

“Nigeria also deeply sympathises with the families and friends of other victims on board the aircraft,” the president added.

He praised the swift response of India’s emergency services and expressed confidence in their ability to manage the aftermath with care and professionalism.

Tinubu concluded by praying for the souls of the departed and for comfort to be granted to grieving families.
