In a landmark move to celebrate Nigeria’s rich history and enduring values, President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, in honor of the late statesman and nationalist, Yusuf Maitama Sule.
The institution will now be known as the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, a tribute to a man whose life exemplified integrity, patriotism, and unwavering service to the nation.
The announcement, made on the 10th of March, 2025, by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, underscores Tinubu’s commitment to preserving the legacy of visionary leaders.
The president believes that associating the university with the revered diplomat will serve as a beacon of inspiration for future generations, instilling in them the values of leadership, character, and national unity.
Originally established by the Kano State Government, the university now stands among the seven specialized federal universities of education in Nigeria.

This renaming not only cements Maitama Sule’s contributions to the country’s socio-political development but also reinforces the significance of education in nation-building.
Yusuf Maitama Sule (1929–2017) was a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and diplomatic history. As Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, he played a crucial role in global diplomacy, particularly as chairman of the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid, where he championed the fight for racial justice.
By immortalizing his name through education, President Tinubu ensures that Maitama Sule’s legacy continues to shape the minds of young Nigerians, fostering a future built on the principles he so passionately upheld.
