President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dispatched a Presidential delegation to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to support Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as they aim to clinch a record-breaking fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women’s title.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, the President announced that the delegation is led by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, alongside other senior government officials.
“I have dispatched a Presidential Delegation to Abidjan to stand with our superlative D’Tigress as they pursue a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title for Nigeria,” Tinubu wrote.
The President commended the team’s outstanding performance, character, and discipline throughout the tournament, describing them as ambassadors of the Nigerian spirit.
“Our girls have shown character, discipline, and the Nigerian spirit in every game. As they prepare for the final in two hours, we stand behind them—not just as fans, but as a grateful nation inspired by their excellence,” he said.
Tinubu concluded with a rallying call: “Go for gold. Go for glory, girls!”

The final match, scheduled for later today in Abidjan, offers D’Tigress the chance to secure an unprecedented fifth straight AfroBasket Women’s crown, extending their dominance in African women’s basketball.
A Legacy of Dominance
Nigeria’s D’Tigress have been a powerhouse in African basketball since reclaiming the AfroBasket title in 2017. They successfully defended it in 2019, 2021, and 2023, making them the first team to win four consecutive titles.
Their current run in Abidjan has been nothing short of spectacular, with decisive victories in the group stages and a commanding semi-final performance that booked their spot in the grand finale.
If victorious today, D’Tigress will not only make history with a fifth consecutive title but will also reinforce Nigeria’s position as the most dominant team in African women’s basketball history.
