President Bola Tinubu will formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police on Wednesday, March 4, following the Nigeria Police Council’s unanimous approval of his appointment on Monday, March 2.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed in a statement that, “The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day.”
The council meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was chaired by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Police Service Commission Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional requirements.
Other officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack.
Disu received commendations from several governors.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021, noting his contributions to crime control. Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also endorsed Disu, citing his exemplary career record.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike highlighted Disu’s service as Assistant Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, where he headed the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015.
Wike further acknowledged Disu’s time as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command, commending his efficiency and strategic handling of security issues within the territory. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah supported the endorsement.
Disu’s confirmation follows his brief stint as Acting IGP, which began last week after Kayode Egbetokun resigned.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
He holds multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, demonstrating a focus on knowledge-driven and modern policing.
Prior to this appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, overseeing the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex in Lagos.
