The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the growing number of politicians crossing over from opposition parties is not a threat to democracy but a reflection of renewed faith in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
Speaking on Arise News on Saturday night, October 18, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, argued that the surge of defections shows Nigerians are aligning with a government they believe can deliver results, not evidence of political coercion.
“What we are witnessing is a democratic endorsement of the APC,” Morka said. “People are simply exercising their freedom of choice. Nothing that has happened suggests our country is sliding into a one-party system.”
He dismissed speculation that the ruling party is using federal power to lure governors and lawmakers from other political groups.
“In a country as massive as Nigeria, how do you cajole governors who are chief executives of their states? They control their own budgets. What exactly would you tell a governor to cajole him?” he asked.

Morka described opposition claims as “excuses of sinking ships” and urged parties like the PDP and Labour Party to fix their internal problems.
“If the PDP, Labour, or ADC look inward, they will find that it is their dysfunction and failure of leadership driving people away. Nobody wants to remain on a sinking ship,” he said.
The APC spokesman said the ruling party’s growing attraction lies in Tinubu’s economic reforms and visible progress across sectors.
“The APC is a party of method and hope under the President’s leadership. Our macroeconomic indicators are improving — inflation is around 18% — and things will get better. Nigerians can see the path to recovery,” he added.
Political observers say the latest wave of defections underscores a shifting political tide ahead of 2027, with many politicians seeking early alignment with the centre of power.
