Media personality Toke Makinwa has said she prefers using her money to meet urgent needs such as hospital bills and direct support for people in distress, rather than paying a monthly tithe to the church.
In a recent YouTube video, Makinwa explained that she stopped paying regular tithe after noticing that many churches she knows appear financially comfortable, often running building projects funded by congregants.
“All the churches I know are rich. Every Sunday there’s a building fund envelope. You guys have so much money, and it’s not taxed,” she said.

She added that some church leadership structures tend to remain within families, resembling business succession.
Makinwa clarified that she still gives offerings and supports church programs, but the money she would have paid in tithe is now directed to areas with immediate human needs, including paying hospital bills, assisting widows, and helping individuals with urgent financial burdens.
“I would rather go to hospitals, take a maternity ward, and pay all the bills there,” she said, adding that helping people with actual needs aligns more closely with her personal convictions.
She encouraged individuals to act according to their own beliefs, stressing that direct support to those struggling can make a tangible difference.
