A senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), identified as Abu Hassan, has reportedly been killed during a failed attack on Cross Kauwa in Borno State.
The development was disclosed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post shared on X on Sunday, July 19, citing intelligence sources.
According to the report, Abu Hassan, described as one of ISWAP’s top Qaids operating from the Tumbunma axis, was among the commanders who led the assault on Cross Kauwa but was killed during the operation.
The report also stated that another fighter, believed to be an Arab national, died during the attack.
It further revealed that another senior ISWAP commander, Aliyi Zabarmari, who reportedly led fighters from the Tumbunma enclave, sustained a gunshot wound that left him with a fractured thigh.

Intelligence sources also disclosed that another unidentified Arab fighter remained unaccounted for following the failed operation.
According to the report, security sources described the losses as a significant blow to ISWAP, noting that the affected individuals were among the group’s key field commanders responsible for coordinating attacks across communities in the Lake Chad region.
The report did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the operation or whether Nigerian security forces suffered casualties during the confrontation.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the reported incident.
