Troops Intercept Canoe Shipments Linked To Zamfara Terrorist Kingpin

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have intercepted three disassembled canoes allegedly procured for suspected terrorist kingpin Shehu Bagewaye to aid the movement of his fighters through riverine areas of Zamfara State.

The canoes were intercepted on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following intelligence that they had been sourced from Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State and were being transported to Zamfara.

Media Information Officer of Joint Task Force North-West, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, disclosed this in a statement.

He said the canoes were intended to help the terrorists navigate waterways and overcome river obstacles restricting their movement, potentially enhancing their capacity for criminal operations against communities.

Acting on the intelligence, troops of Sector 2 mounted a covert operation and intercepted the consignment before it reached its destination.

The handlers abandoned the canoes and fled after sighting the troops.

The items are now in military custody, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved.

Danja said the interception demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations in disrupting terrorist logistics and limiting the operational reach of criminal networks.

He reaffirmed the task force’s commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and cutting off their logistical support across the Joint Operations Area.

The military urged residents to provide timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains vital to preventing attacks and protecting lives and property.
