The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called on the federal government to immediately lower the pump price of petrol, warning that the current rates are worsening economic hardship for workers and households.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the labour federation said the rising cost of fuel is driving up transportation fares and the prices of basic goods, putting further strain on Nigerians already facing high inflation.
Recent adjustments in the downstream petroleum sector have seen refinery gantry prices reach around ₦1,275 per litre as of Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with pump prices averaging near ₦1,250 per litre in major cities, though inland areas experience higher rates due to distribution costs.

The TUC stressed that sustained high fuel prices are affecting daily commuting and business activities, and urged the government to take urgent action to ease the burden on citizens.
The union also called for more transparency in fuel pricing and measures to shield the public from the impact of fluctuating global crude prices.
Failure to adjust prices, the TUC warned, could exacerbate public frustration and potentially trigger nationwide protests, underscoring the need for immediate intervention to make fuel more affordable.
