Two More Corpses Found Weeks After Niger Flood Disaster

Over three weeks after a devastating flood hit Mokwa Local Government Area in Niger State, emergency officials have recovered two more bodies.

The flood, which followed a heavy downpour on May 29, left over 200 people dead and displaced more than 3,000 residents. Over 50 houses were destroyed in the disaster.

In a statement on Thursday, June 19, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) confirmed the latest development.

“Two more dead bodies were recovered today at the downstream of the bridge,” said Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of NSEMA.

He explained that the rains from the previous day had dislodged sand dunes along the water channel, exposing the remains.

“Yesterday’s rains that flowed along the water channel washed away sand dunes that covered the dead bodies. The dead bodies were decomposed beyond recognition,” Baba-Arah said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the state’s deputy governor, Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Bago at an event, revealed that over 700 people were still unaccounted for following the flood.
