UK Coroner Rules Nigerian Caregiver Beatrice Solomon Died By Suicide

A coroner’s court in the United Kingdom has ruled that 27-year-old Nigerian caregiver Beatrice Solomon died by suicide following a prolonged struggle with mental health challenges linked to personal difficulties.

The ruling was delivered after an inquest into the death of Solomon, who relocated to the UK from Nigeria in November 2023 on a skilled worker visa.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, her husband, Damian Butler, left their home on Norris Road, Stanfield, for work at about 4:30 p.m.

He returned roughly two hours later and found his wife unresponsive. Emergency services were called, but she was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:21 p.m.

Police investigations found no evidence of third-party involvement in her death.

During the hearing, Butler told the court that his wife had experienced mental health difficulties over the previous year, which he linked to ongoing personal challenges. He also revealed that he later learned she had previously attempted to end her life on two occasions.

A post-mortem examination determined that she died from oxygen deprivation.

Delivering her verdict, Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor concluded that the evidence showed Solomon had intentionally taken her own life after planning her actions.

She expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.

Solomon, who worked as a caregiver in the UK, is survived by her husband, a young son and her siblings.
