US Lawmakers Convene Today Over Christian Persecution Crisis in NIgeria

A joint congressional briefing by the United States House Appropriations Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, the 2nd of December, 2025, to address the mounting instances of violence and alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

The upcoming session was disclosed via a notice shared on X by US Congressman Riley Moore.

The briefing will be convened by Mario Díaz-Balart, who serves as the House Appropriations Committee Vice Chair and National Security Subcommittee Chairman. He will be joined by fellow Appropriators as well as members from the Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committees.

The explicit goal of the meeting, according to the official notice, is “to spotlight the escalating violence and targeted persecution of Christians in Nigeria.”

The roundtable discussions are designed to collect key testimony that will be used to generate a comprehensive report. This report has been “directed by President Trump on the massacre of Nigerian Christians and the steps Congress can take to support the White House’s efforts to protect vulnerable faith communities worldwide.”

This high-level congressional focus coincides with recent developments in diplomatic ties between the two nations. President Bola Tinubu has already sanctioned Nigeria’s team for the new US–Nigeria Joint Working Group, a body established to implement security agreements arising from high-level talks recently held in Washington, led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
