VAN DIJK UNDERGOES KNEE SURGERY

Liverpool has confirmed that defender, Virgil Van Dijk, will undergo surgery on his knee and will miss their Champions League opener.

Van Dijk sustained an injury in Liverpool’s 2-2 Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park.

The defender was injured inside the box, when he collided with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, just six minutes of play.

He was then substituted and after assessment, it was revealed that an operation is needed.

The statement from the club website read, “Liverpool FC can confirm Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery on the knee injury he sustained during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Everton.

“The centre-back damaged knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.

“Van Dijk was required to be substituted and further assessment on the injury has revealed an operation will be needed.

“No specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage.”

Following surgery, Van Dijk will begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical team to enable him to reach full fitness as soon as possible.

Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, after the game on Saturday, confirmed that Thiago Alcantara also picked up an injury.

He also revealed that Van Dijk has been playing with pains even before the game against Everton.

“I don’t know how serious it is, I don’t know, but it is not good.

“Virgil played for us I don’t know how many games in a row.

“He plays with pain, he plays with pretty much everything, but he couldn’t play on.

“That’s not good.”
