Violent Clash Over Motorcycle Theft Leaves Two Dead, Police Station Torched in Nasarawa

Tensions flared in Obi Local Government Area on Sunday following a deadly altercation between a police special constabulary and an army officer, which culminated in the deaths of two people and the destruction of a local police station.

The incident, which began as a routine investigation into a motorcycle theft, quickly spiraled into violence, highlighting underlying tensions and raising questions about community-police relations in the area.

According to a statement from DSP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer for Nasarawa State, the trouble began around 12:30 PM on Sunday at Agyaragu Market.

Police operatives, responding to a theft report, arrested a suspect with the assistance of a Police Special Constabulary attached to the Jenkwe Division.

However, as the officers attempted to transport the suspect to the police station, they were confronted by an army officer.

Identified as a soldier on leave from his service post in Borno State, the officer reportedly intervened, seeking to obstruct the arrest.

Tensions escalated, and, according to the police statement, the soldier produced a knife and allegedly stabbed the Police Special Constabulary.

In the struggle that ensued, the soldier was disarmed, and his own weapon was used against him. Both men sustained serious injuries, and the soldier later succumbed to his wounds, while the police constable was also critically injured.

The news of the soldier’s death quickly spread, igniting anger within the community. In an apparent act of retaliation, a group of local youths mobilized and launched an attack on the Jenkwe Police Station. The station was set on fire in the violence that followed.

Responding swiftly, police officers at the scene engaged with the mob, which ultimately resulted in further casualties. Three individuals were injured, and one was later confirmed dead.

The Commissioner of Police for Nasarawa State, CP Umar Nadada, visited the scene with reinforcements from the military and tactical police units, including personnel from Operation Whirl Stroke, 177 Guards Battalion, and 22 Quick Response Unit.

CP Nadada has since ordered a deployment of additional police units to maintain order and launched an investigation to locate those involved in the unrest.

While calm has now been restored in the area, the incident has left a trail of devastation and raised questions about community tensions with law enforcement.

As investigations continue, authorities are calling for calm and cooperation from residents, assuring them that further security measures are in place to prevent any resurgence of violence.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring peace while balancing relations with local communities, as authorities work to rebuild trust in the wake of Sunday’s deadly clash.
